K9 Maggie
In January of 2014, I was contacted by Chief Ed Martin of Hanover Hounds in Virginia. We were organizing my visit to their annual K9 Hero Day event when we discussed turning that day in to a presentation for one of their local K9 Heroes who sadly passed away due to complications from injuries while on duty. This hero was K9 Maggie of the Louisa County Sheriff's Office.
K9 Maggie was the first canine of the LCSO to die In The Line Of Duty. Maggie served 5 1/2 years with the Louisa County Sheriff's Office K9 Division and has answered over 300 calls for service. In 2010 alone, K9 Maggie had 55 call-outs that varied from trailing a Breaking and Entering suspect to looking for a missing 5 year old child. She also has assisted local, state and federal agencies with cases.
One evening while out searching for a suicidal person in the woods, her and her handler Lt. Patrick Sheridan were attacked by two loose pit bulls in the complete darkness. Although Lt. Sheridan was able to pull the dogs off of K9 Maggie, she was badly injured. Although immediately rushing K9 Maggie to the emergency veterinarian, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after.
K-9 Maggie, Badge # 107A with the Louisa County Sheriff's Office in Louisa, Virginia, EOW 12-12-11, Handler Lieutenant Patrick W. Sheridan. K9 Maggie is missed by all in her community, department and the Sheridan family.
On March 22nd, 2014, I presented the portrait to Lt. Patrick Sheridan in front of the community, fellow officers and military who were there to all support the event. Lt. Sheridan loved the portrait of K9 Maggie and was especially pleased that I captured her special toes.
K9 Maggie has several items in the Etsy store offered for sale. Please browse the store and see items for other K9 (and equine!), heroes we have. All proceeds help cover the costs of future portraits and fundraising endeavors The K9 Hero Portrait does for soldiers, handlers, and the adoptive families of K9 Heroes. https://www.etsy.com/shop/K9HeroPortraitProjec
